Activate RDS License Server in Windows Server 2016 & 2019: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing the RD Licensing Role:

Before activation, ensure the Remote Desktop Licensing role is installed on your designated server. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Sign In and Open Server Manager: Log in to the server using an administrator account and open Server Manager. Activate RDS license
  2. Add Roles: In Server Manager, navigate to “Roles Summary” and click “Add Roles.” Proceed by clicking “Next.”
  3. Select Remote Desktop Services: Choose “Remote Desktop Services” and proceed with the installation by clicking “Next.”
  4. Choose Remote Desktop Licensing: Among the role services, select “Remote Desktop Licensing” and continue by clicking “Next.”
  5. Configure Domain: Opt for “Configure a discovery scope for this license server” and select “This domain.” Click “Next.”
  6. Installation: Review your selections and click “Install” to initiate installation.

Activating the License Server:

Once the RD Licensing role is installed, activating the license server is the next step. Follow these steps:

  1. To open Remote Desktop Licensing Manager, Navigate to Start > Administrative Tools > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Licensing Manager.
  2. Activate Server: Right-click on the license server listed and select “Activate Server.”
  3. Welcome Page: Click “Next” on the welcome page to proceed.
  4. Connection Method: Choose “Automatic connection (recommended)” for the connection method and click “Next.”
  5. Enter Company Information: Input your company details, including your name, company name, and geographic region. Click “Next” to continue.
  6. Optional Company Information: Optionally, you can enter additional company information such as email and addresses. Click “Next.”
  7. Installation Preferences: Ensure that “Start Install Licenses Wizard now” is unchecked, as licenses will be installed later. Click “Next.”
  8. Completion: Your license server is now ready to issue and manage licenses. Click “Finish” to complete the activation process.
